The Idea: What is the idea behind the kassiope-project? PDF Print E-mail

Open Source software has the following main characteristics: Its license does not require a license fee and the distributed software includes source code.

In the latest years a huge number of products have been evolved under an Open Source license. The operating system GNU/Linux is only the best-known of them. In addition there are lots of other products, like web servers (e.g. Apache), programming languages (e.g. PHP), databases (e.g. MySQL), and many others.

The kassiope-project wants to contribute to transfer the Open Source idea to the topic of business applications. The long-term goal is that there are systems for accounting, materiel management, human-resources and so on, on an Open Source base.

It is the aim of the kassiope-project to produce a development environment for such business applications.

Business applications differ from word processing programs, web servers, editors and other software in various points.

  1. On the whole their content consists of data that is stored in databases.
  2. The data is queried and managed by a (graphical) user interface.
  3. All interactions can be reduced to four base types:
    1. Create
    2. Read
    3. Update
    4. Delete
  4. Usually more or less complex algorithms are added to these four base types.
The planned development tool is based on the characteristic features of business applications. What can be automated, is to be automated. But it is important that even the most complex algorithms can be integrated.
